Q & A with John Wickersheim of MSA

MSA Safety Incorporated is the global leader in the development, manufacture and supply of safety products that protect people and facility infrastructures. They just unveiled LUNAR – a small, wireless, cloud-ready device designed to provide higher levels of protection for firefighters through enhanced vision, improved situational awareness and team connectivity.  When used together on a fireground or while responding to any other type of hazard, this suite of products provides a new platform for firefighter safety the company has branded as “Connected Firefighter.”

Why are you excited to join us at SafeCon and what can we expect to see from you?

This is a great opportunity to showcase MSA as a technology leader. We’re going to show our Connected Firefighter Platform, where we link various technologies together to present a uniform and complete picture to incident command or hazmat leads so they can monitor everything from the air to the minutes remaining to gas detection — all from a remote location. They probably haven’t seen this yet. This is something we just introduced — this connectivity — at FDIC this year.

Why is this revolutionary in the emergency services world?

Incident Command can now get a more complete picture of everything that’s going on. That frees up radio traffic and gives them more information to make better decisions for their resources that they have, whether it be already deployed staging or whether they need to call in additional resources. You have a real-time picture of what’s going on, as opposed to having to call and wait.

Will we get to play your new tech at the conference?

Yes, I envision a few people out in the field with an SCBA and gas detection, performing their normal tasks. We can set up an incident command post and show just how all that connectivity would work.
